Approach

The team approach is emphasized in these studies, with geophysicists, geologists, petrophysicists, well test analysts, reservoir engineers and software specialists working together with the common goal of reservoir characterization and optimization. These professionals are drawn from PetroStudies staff and associates and can be supplemented by the client's staff during the technology transfer phases of each project.

Methodology

PSC's methodology for performing a reservoir study can be summarized as follows: Almost all projects will commence with a data gathering phase. PSC professionals visit the client's offices to confer with the client's staff members most familiar with the subject reservoir. This process helps identify any deficiencies in basic data and solidifies the project goals with participation from the client. Depending on the terms of the contract, subsequent work can be performed either in the client's offices or in PSC's offices. In the later case, every effort is made to ensure that the client is continually informed of the progress of the study and that the most recent and available data is incorporated into the reservoir description study whenever possible. The data gathering and integration phase is followed by the analysis of the data. The amount of professional analysis time required to describe the reservoir will depend on the complexity of the specific reservoir, the quality and quantity of the data and the amount of prior analysis performed by the client. A geological picture of the reservoir will be assembled based upon an understanding of the depositional environment, tectonics, structure, stratigraphy, zonation and correlating geophysical interpretations and well data such as cores, logs, well tests etc. The engineering data (pressure transient testing, PVT and special core tests, production history, completion records etc.) must also be consolidated. The goal is a reservoir characterization that is consistent with the analyses available from all sources. All disciplines contribute strongly across traditional discipline boundaries to ensure that this consistency is achieved. A simulation model is then constructed to describe, in numerical terms, this reservoir characterization. The model is tested with historical production data to ensure that it accurately represents the behavior of the reservoir. The final calibrated model is then used to make forecasts of production rates. A wide variety of scenarios can be considered taking into account the client's priorities and concerns. Based on the forecast runs, recommendations will be made for the optimum depletion strategy and sound reservoir management practices. The future value of the asset can be determined, and the client will be able to make informed operational and financial decisions.

Reservoir Types

PSC's professionals have worked on gas reservoirs, gas condensate fields and oil reservoirs with a wide range of API gravity. Many of these fields were naturally fractured and geologically complex. The studies have involved optimizing hydrocarbon recovery by minimizing coning, using secondary and/or tertiary recovery methods such as waterflood, gas recycling and CO2 injection. These have included individual wells (vertical and horizontal), pilot areas, symmetry patterns, individual reservoirs and multiple communicating reservoirs.

Study Types

Single Well Studies Including Coning and Horizontal Well Justification.

Reservoir Characterization, Migration and Pool Extension Determination.

Pool/Field wide Black Oil and Compositional Simulation Studies:

Primary, Secondary, EOR Recovery: Waterflood, Gas Cycling, Thermal Recovery (Steam Floods, SAGD etc.), CO2/Hydrocarbon Miscible Floods; Conventional Oil, Heavy Oil, Conventional Gas, Condensate & Retrograde Condensate Fluids with EOS Parameter Characterization; Multi-layer, Multi-lithology, Fractured and Faulted Reservoirs.

Integrated and co-ordinated studies both for and with client personnel.

Results

In many cases, the studies have identified reservoir extensions and unswept regions of the reservoirs where additional wells were successfully drilled. The direct economic benefit derived from these wells have been far in excess the costs of the studies. Other studies have identified sensitivity to infill drilling patterns and rate sensitivity leading to cost saving approaches to developing the reservoirs. In addition, many of these studies have been used as technology transfer projects for the client's professionals and thus have had benefits extending beyond the specific study.

Future

With research and development leading to the industry's first reservoir simulator with Automatic History Matching capability, PetroStudies professionals have the engineering software to help in obtaining improved reservoir characterizations and completing studies more quickly and efficiently. This leads to lower costs for the client and more accurate results. PetroStudies is committed to continuing this dedication to providing clients with the most effective means to solve their problems. This includes an ongoing effort to make the latest solution techniques and tools available.
